Moon Split | চাঁদ খন্ডিত
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
- The Hour has come near , and the moon has split [in two] .
The Moon splitting, known as the "Moon Split" or "Shaqq al-Qamar," refers to an event in Islamic history when the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is said to have performed a miracle by splitting the Moon in response to a challenge from the Quraysh. This miraculous event is referenced in the Quran: "The Hour has come near , and the moon has split [in two] " — (Surah Al-Qamar, 54:1) "
What Does Current Science Say About the Moon Split ?
Current scientific understanding does not provide evidence that the Moon was physically split into two parts and then rejoined. Astronomers and planetary scientists studying the Moon have not found geological evidence to suggest such an event occurred in the Moon's history. The surface features of the Moon, including its craters, mountains, and rilles, are primarily explained by natural phenomena like meteor impacts and volcanic activity.
NASA and other space agencies have conducted extensive studies of the Moon, especially after the Apollo missions, and the data collected so far do not support the idea of a literal split. The geological history of the Moon, as understood through lunar samples and remote sensing, does not indicate any large-scale division and rejoining of the lunar surface.
As believers, what do we as Muslims think about the Moon Split ?
As Muslims, we believe that the splitting and rejoining of the Moon were miraculous events done entirely by the power of Allah. The rejoining was perfect and complete, meaning that the Moon returned to its original condition without any signs or traces of the split. Unlike human efforts, where repairs often leave visible marks or imperfections, this miracle was performed by Allah, the Creator of the Moon and the entire universe, ensuring that everything was restored perfectly.
Some may raise the question: If this event truly happened, why didn't everyone at the time witness or notice the process? To answer this, let's consider a simple example. Imagine a car moving at 100 km/h. If you were asked how much time it takes for the car to travel just 1 meter, the answer is 0.0006 seconds, a fraction of time so small that human eyes cannot perceive the movement in such a short interval.
The speed of light, which is the fastest velocity known to us, is 1,079,252,849 km/h. Even at this immense speed, our human perception is limited, and we are unable to detect or comprehend events occurring at such a scale. For instance, if Allah performed the Moon Split at the speed of light, how could we possibly detect it when we can't even perceive the time it takes for a car traveling at just 100 km/h to cover 1 meter?
Allah, the Creator of the laws of nature and time itself, can make anything happen in ways that are beyond our understanding and perception. If He wills something to occur in an instant, it can happen faster than our senses or technology can register. Therefore, just because we, as humans, didn't detect or observe the Moon Split doesn't mean it didn't happen. Allah’s power and ability transcend the limitations of human perception, and we must trust in His infinite capabilities, which are far beyond the scope of our scientific understanding.
In this light, the miracle of the Moon Split serves as a reminder of Allah's unmatched power and our own limited grasp of the vast and wondrous workings of the universe.
