The Names and Times of the Five Daily Prayers in the Qur’an

The Qur’an does not explicitly mention the names and exact times of all five daily prayers together in one place. However, it does refer to multiple prayers, which are considered the basis for the five daily prayers established in Islam. The complete details—such as the number of prayers, their specific times, and units (rak‘aat)—are primarily derived from the Sunnah (the teachings and practices of the Prophet Muhammad īˇē). Nevertheless, the Qur’an contains several verses that hint at the different prayer times.

Below are some important verses highlighting this:

1. Command to Perform Salah at Appointed Times

Surah An-Nisa (4:103) : And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides. But when you become secure, re-establish [regular] prayer. Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.

This verse clearly instructs that salah must be performed at its appointed times.

2. Mention of Three Main Times of the Day for Salah

Surah Hud (11:114) : And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.

“The two ends of the day” refer to:

  • Fajr Salah (beginning of the day)
  • Maghrib Salah (after sunset)
  • In some interpretations, Dhuhr is also included as the midday prayer.

“The early part of the night” refers to:

  • Isha Salah, which is performed in the early night

3. Mention of Morning and Evening Prayers

Surah Al-Isra (17:78): “Establish prayer from the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night, and [also] the Qur'an of dawn. Indeed, the Qur'an of dawn is ever witnessed.”

Based on this verse, the timings of the five daily prayers can be interpreted as follows:

  • “Decline of the sun” refers to: Dhuhr and Asr prayers
  • “Darkness of the night” refers to: Maghrib and Isha prayers
  • “Qur’an of dawn” refers to: Fajr prayer

4. Specific Mention of Fajr and Isha Prayers

Surah An-Nur (24:58): O you who have believed, let those whom your right hands possess and those who have not [yet] reached puberty among you ask permission of you [before entering] at three times: before the dawn prayer and when you put aside your clothing [for rest] at noon and after the night prayer. [These are] three times of privacy for you. There is no blame upon you nor upon them beyond these [periods], for they continually circulate among you - some of you, among others. Thus does Allah make clear to you the verses; and Allah is Knowing and Wise.

Prayer times mentioned in the verse:

  • Fajr (Morning Prayer)
  • Isha (Night Prayer)
